I’m Taegeun (Luke) Kwon, a Korean General Surgery specialist with over a decade of experience, now transitioning my career into the medical field in the U.S. After obtaining my U.S. Medical License, I needed to improve my English to interview with hospitals in the U.S., and this is why I chose AmigoTalk and Maria.

In my previous post on this bulletin board, I highly recommended Maria for her enthusiasm, professional attitude, and great teaching experience. On top of that, I’m excited to share some good news—I matched with a U.S. Residency Program and will begin working as a physician this July. Just one simple sentence: I could not have done this without her help.

The interview process in the U.S. was completely different from what I experienced in Korea. American recruiters are interested in learning about my challenges and how they shaped who I am. Although I’ve had many university, med school, and job interviews in South Korea, I had never experienced Western-style interviews. This is where Maria’s lessons truly stood out.

Her personal challenges, unique perspective, and strong interpersonal skills—both as a teacher and as a friend—were invaluable. I applied the lessons she taught me and was able to successfully translate them into the interview process, as well as into my work and life.

In short, she is a resilient person who can find blessings in disguise, even in desperate situations. I want to be like her and introduce her to anyone who wants to learn and expand their horizons - not only in English, but also in life itself.
