I was sitting on my chair, listening to the English cassette, and repeating after the alphabet one by one. It was one of the famous home-based English studying materials and I was repeating after it as loud as I can so that my parents could hear it. I knew that my parents would be very pleased if they could hear that I was speaking English. At that time I was like 8-9 years old. Time flew. 10 years later, now, I’m writing an English essay and isn't it just amazing? Although I have been studying English for like, 10 years now, writing an essay in English still sounds like a miracle to me. Because English was like a high mountain I had to climb up, a foe that I have to defeat and it never seemed to end. At first, like other Korean students, I studied English to get better grades at a test. I tried to memorize all the passages and the vocabularies that were in the school text book. I never doubted my way of studying English because I could get somewhat good results every time and I cannot deny that it actually helped improve my English skill. However, one day I ran into English-speaking guys on the street asking for directions. I made a terrible mistake. I was a bit overconfident with my English at that time. When they asked me if I could speak English, I answered "a little bit". So, they asked me where the clubs around were and---suddenly I panicked. Have you ever seen a character that turned into a stone in a video game or a movie? I insist it happened at that time. Somehow my brain turned into a stone, and I answered "I don't go to the club." I can clearly remember the embarrassed smile on their faces so... They kept explaining that they were not asking me to go with them, but just asking where it is. I knew, I did know exactly what they were asking, but I just couldn't say anything else. I just kept saying "I don't go to the club". They turned around and just went away... I was so frustrated. After so many years of studying it, all I could say was the frustrating, misunderstanding phrase, "I don't go to the club"? Why didn't I just say 'I'm not local' or 'I don't know'? No. I could have said something easier. I could have said the most popular word in Since that happened, I lost all my confidence in English. I realized that I cannot compose even a simple sentence, and that I'm just poor at speaking. But I found the most important fact that English was a language. Well, of course I knew English is a language, but I overlooked that it is used when people communicate. English is a way of talking and I hadn't really studied how to speak in English. I liked talking to friends and I felt pleased when I’m talking to them, but I did never use English in that way. I felt happy only when I got higher result from a test. So I started to look for fun ways of English study. Fun ways were not really special ways. I started to watch many American dramas and I tried to make foreign friends by email, and played video games in English version, bought English comic books and so on... Some of them worked, some didn't. But the most significant improvement is that now I don't get stunned when I’m around English. I just feel so glad that I can share my feelings and thoughts with my friends. And I am pretty sure that I won't run away or say something absurd even if I suddenly meet someone speaking English though I may stutter a lot... well. Anyways, I want to say this again… Isn't it amazing? I still make lots of mistakes and feel a bit embarrassed when my teacher fix my mistakes. I always forgot to put 'a' before singular nouns and I'm always confused with all those grammars and words. I even repeat the same words over and over so my English is just too simple. But I have no doubt that I'd get better gradually with my teacher, who became one of my favorite friends. Hooray! Thanks to Amigo English, My teacher and all the good American dramas!
The Importance of ‘Extensive Reading’ Name: Hong Joon Sun / Rio Teacher: No A few days ago, while I was watching TV, a story about a boy attracted my attention. Even though he was an elementary school student and his family was not very rich and they could not afford to let him study in expensive language academies, his English ability was amazing. He was able to read English novels without any difficulties as well as speak English fluently like those children who have been to other countries for studying English. I wondered how he could master English without going abroad. He said the secret was ‘extensive reading’. Since he started to read Korean alphabet, his mother had bought him simple books written in English as well as Korean at the same time. As he read lots of English books, he acquired English spontaneously. The story was so interesting for me and reminded me of how I have been studying English so far. When I was a teenager, I didn’t study hard but drew cartoons in the last row of the classroom. It was only 5 years ago that I started to study English. At the beginning, it was really hard for me to grasp the meaning of English sentences. Even though I finished some grammar books, interpreting English articles was difficult for me. So, I started to read very easy English novels which were designed for children. The more English books I read, the more I got confidence in English. I even acquired English grammar automatically. After all, I could get high score in TOEIC exam without studying it particularly. To be honest, reading English novels is so fun. When you take English reading exams, careful reading is required. But, what you need is to enjoy reading books in the extensively. I had a chance to participate in a TESOL conference a month ago. In the conference, one of the well known professors emphasized the importance of extensive reading and gave a speech about how to do it efficiently. The thing that impressed me during his lecture was (I-1). (I) represents your current reading ability and (1) represents an easier stage than your current level. Therefore, (I-1) means that when you read an English book, you’d better choose the easier book of your level. It will help you a lot to improve your reading ability, he said. Actually, Korean students tend to read difficult things such as Newsweek, New York Times, or English newspaper. But, they are not only difficult but also boring. So, you might lose interest in reading. As mentioned in above cases, I strongly recommend you to read lots of books. Do not care about the genre, and do not care about whether it will be educational or not. Just read books which you can enjoy. Then, without your noticing, your English ability will improve rapidly |
